1. What is Modbus?

Modbus is an application layer protocol mainly used for device communication in industrial automation. 2. What is ProfiNET?

ProfiNET is an industrial Ethernet standard introduced by the PROFIBUS user organisation, which is based on Ethernet technology and provides high-speed, real-time data transfer capabilities.ProfiNET supports a wide range of communication mechanisms, including real-time Ethernet, motion control and distributed automation. Modbus is typically used for small or cost-sensitive projects, and for those applications that do not require high-speed data transmission. ProfiNET, on the other hand, is suitable for large industrial automation projects that require high-speed, real-time communication and high security.

Suppose a manufacturing plant, initially using Modbus-based control system, with the expansion of production scale and the increase of automation needs, the original Modbus system can no longer meet the needs of high-speed data transmission and real-time control.
To solve these problems, the factory decides to upgrade to a ProfiNET system. During the upgrade process, they need to convert the existing Modbus devices to ProfiNET compatible devices via gateways or adapters. For example, the PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) in the plant were originally communicating with sensors and actuators via Modbus, but now by installing ProfiNET adapters, the PLCs are able to communicate with these devices at higher speeds and with greater security.
